Paper Flower Tutorial - Peony
Hi everyone, it's Alex here again. I hope you enjoyed making your paper flower from our first tutorial. This month we're making paper peonies adapted from Lia Griffiths. She has a wonderful collection of crepe paper flower tutorials over on her website liagriffiths.com . For this tutorial I have chosen Italian crepe paper in creme for the Peony, an orange centre for a pop of color, and of course green paper for the stem and leaves. Let's get started!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Crepe Paper x3 colors
- Wire - 18 gauge stem wire
- Floral Tape - .5" wide
- Use your prepared stencils to cut out the following:
7 x small rounded petal (7 x 4.5 cm)7 x heart ruffle petal (5 x 6 cm)6 x large petal (9.5 x 7 cm)5 x sepal petal (2 cm x 8 mm)3 x leaf petal (6.5 x 4.5 cm)1 x rectangle for stamens (6.5 x 5.5 cm). Cut the rectangle into a fringe (see photo)
- Sharp scissors
Step 1. Cup your crepe paper into small rounded petals, heart ruffle petals, and large petals. Be sure to only stretch the middle so that it creates a cup shape! Ruffle the edges of the heart ruffle petal by grabbing the end with your thumb and index finger of both hands and pulling away from each other. Be sure to do this gently or else you can rip the paper.
Step 2. Fold the end of the wire so that there's more surface area to glue the fringe to. Hot glue the fringe at the beginning, wrap around and secure with hot glue at the end.
Step 3. Start by placing a small dab of hot glue at the tip of the small round petals. Attach it just below where you attached the stamen section and repeat until you have used all of these sized petals.
Step 4. Hot glue the pointed ends of the heart petals so that the frilly part peeks slightly over the rounded petals. This may mean that you are glueing your heart petals to the petal instead of to the stem, that's ok! It will get covered!
Step 6. Hot glue the sepal petals to the base of the flower, put them on the wire just a little bit that way you'll cover the ends with floral tape.
Step 7. Start covering the stem in floral tape, stretching and wrapping it as you go down the stem. Stop when you want to add the first leaf.
Step 8. Cut a small piece of wire. Place a bead of hot glue at the base of the leaf and place the wire in it, fold the crepe in half to give it some shape and cover the glue. Floral tape the wire so that it's covered completely.
Step 9. Place the wire with the leaf attached up against the stem wire. Continue wrapping the floral tape down the stem, attaching the leaf. Repeat with the following 2 leaves, placing them anywhere you would like on the stem.
