Interview with Vancouver Jewelry Designer, Melanie Hull.

WHO ARE YOU?
My name is Melanie Hull and I'm the jewelry designer behind the line MH by Melanie Hull

WHAT DO YOU CREATE?
I create minimalist jewelry that works for everyday life and wear.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOOLS AND PROCESSES?
My tools are things like hammers, saws, drills, and my two hands. Everything is made by using traditional hand fabricated techniques, and lost wax casting using Brass, Silver and Gold.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I am inspired by a minimalist lifestyle, the outdoors, organic shapes, and other like minded designers. You can find me skiing in the mountains in the Winter, and swimming in the ocean enjoying the sun in the Summer. I like simple things that last and can be passed down with a story.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PROCESS?
I make things that I love, hoping my customers love them too.  I often have a pen and notebook by my bed, I dream ideas while I sleep sometimes. I make a prototype, wear it out for a bit and suddenly it's into production.

WHERE IS YOUR STUDIO?
My studio is a tiny heated shed in Vancouver, it's where I honker down and
get things done. I'd love to find a little camper or air stream and turn that into a mobile studio and hit the open road.

WHEN ARE YOU MOST PRODUCTIVE?
I'm most productive in the early am with a good cup of coffee. I set up a routine of what needs to be done and put the metal to the metal sort of speak.

WHY JEWELRY?
Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by jewelry. I'd pile on my Ukrainian Grandma's rings and pretend I owned a shop or that I was one rich lady with rings of gold. Ha! So I guess the fascination continues!

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START?
I always wanted take a silversmithing and jewelry design course, so I took some courses and invested in some good tools and here I am today. I read a lot on jewelry making processes, and ask a lot of questions. From the very first class I had a mini collection that I wanted to make. It's slowly growing everyday with more shops taking on my line, I love when I spy someone wearing a piece of my jewelry that I designed. It just puts the biggest smile on my face.
